In the Austrian state of Burgenland, the local energy supply company “Burgenland Energie” is testing two local renewable energy communities (EEG) together with Exnaton. These two EEGs are based on the Austrian Renewable Development Act (EAEC), which was ratified in July 2021. The participating households, which were equipped with a customer-friendly app (in Burgenland Energy Design), received particular attention. Using this, EEG members were able to track their energy consumption in real time and derive more efficient behavior.

In order to prepare for upcoming challenges, Exnaton has carried out a profitability analysis for virtual ZEVs in collaboration with CKW. The municipal utility of the Tyrolean state capital, Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe (“IKB”), is preparing an innovative and digital service to give the city's citizens the opportunity to participate in the energy transition simply and easily. IKB provides both the service and the technical platform so that citizens can establish and join renewable energy communities. The platform enables the billing and administration of energy communities and a customer-friendly app visualizes energy flows and communicates energy saving tips.
In the Austrian municipality of Schnifis, Vorarlberg's first energy community has been tested since September 2020. Here, we are heavily guided by the new guidelines of the Renewable Expansion Act in Austria and enable participants to benefit from reduced network charges and charges. A particular focus of this project is the integration of photovoltaics and biogas.
Quartierstrom2.0 in Walenstadt is the Exnaton team's first project. Originally launched as a research project by ETH Zurich and the University of St. Gallen in support of a renowned Swiss consortium and funded by the Federal Office of Energy, Switzerland's first energy community was tested there. The successor project Quartierstrom2.0 has been live since January 2020.
